چکیده

We study the evolution and observability of young compact star clusters within ∼ 200 pc of the Galactic center. Calculations are performed using direct N-body integration on the GRAPE-4, including the effects of both stellar and binary evolution and the external influence of the Galaxy. The results of these detailed calculations are used to calibrate a simplified model applicable over a wider range of cluster initial conditions. We find that clusters within 200 pc of the Galactic center dissolve within ∼ 70 Myr. However, their projected densities drop below the background density in the direction of the Galactic center within ∼ 20Myr, effectively making these clusters undetectable after that time. Clusters farther from the Galactic center but at the same projected distance are more strongly affected by this selection effect, and may go undetected for their entire lifetimes. Based on these findings, we conclude that the region within 200 pc of the Galactic center could easily harbor some 50 clusters with properties similar to those of the Arches or the Quintuplet systems.

Starburst Clusters in Galactic Nuclei

Galactic nuclei often harbor a disproportionately large amount of star formation activity with respect to their surrounding disks. Not coincidentally, the density of molecular material in galactic nuclei is often also much greater than that in disks (Table 1 in Kennicutt 1998). The interplay between rich populations of young stars and dense molecular environments is evident in our own Galactic ...

The Disruption of Stellar Clusters Containing Massive Black Holes near the Galactic Center

We present results of dynamical Monte Carlo simulations of dense star clusters near the Galactic center. These clusters sink toward the center of the Galaxy by dynamical friction. During their inspiral, they may undergo core collapse and form an intermediate mass black hole by runaway collisions. Such a cluster can reach within a parsec of the Galactic center where it disrupts and leaves many y...

The fate of star clusters near the Galactic center I: Analytic considerations

A star cluster in a galactic nucleus sinks toward the galactic center due to dynamical friction. As it spirals inward, the cluster loses mass due to stellar evolution, relaxation driven evaporation, and tidal stripping, eventually dissolving in the galactic tidal field. We model the inspiral of dense young star clusters near the center of our Galaxy to study the extent of the region of paramete...

Implications for the formation of star clusters from extra-galactic star-formation rates

Observations indicate that young massive star clusters in spiral and dwarf galaxies follow a relation between luminosity of the brightest young cluster and the star-formation rate (SFR) of the host galaxy, in the sense that higher SFRs lead to the formation of brighter clusters. Assuming that the empirical relation between maximum cluster luminosity and SFR reflects an underlying similar relati...

The Galactic Center He I Stars: Remains of a Dissolved Young Cluster?

A massive young star cluster, initially embedded in its parent molecular cloud, will spiral into the Galactic Center from ∼ < 30m 1/2 6 pc during the life-time of its most massive stars, if the combined total mass is ∼ 10m6 M⊙. On its way inwards the system loses most of its mass to the strong tidal field, until the dense cluster core of high-mass stars is finally disrupted near the central bla...
